Right on-this helped me sort tnhigs right out.
To Jessica King:
I hope you understand upfront the value, and liberty, in "freedom of speech" as you read my comments henceforth. I respect your opinion, but respectfully, I disagree. Not that I feel any of these items are all directly intertwined, however, it is my belief that GW is only carrying out his duties as President, Chief-in-command of the U.S. Military, and International Leader and advisor on several global councils in a way that resonates with his own personal beliefs, morals, and ethics. That is afterall, what he swore to do the day that he took the Oath of Office.
You're free to disagree with GW. I have on numerous occasions, disagreed myself, however I know (as should you) that our President welcomes disagreement. Such open discussion enables him to hear all sides of the story before making an educated decision. I should also remind you, he's not the only person in the White House.
Allow me to share some other perspectives:
Consider for a moment - you're an Iraqi, the year is 1999, and no one - including the most powerful nation in the world (U.S.A.) gives a crap about you. You have no right entitling you to "free speech" and you are being oppressed by a tyranny of dictatorship, terror, and capital punishment for anyone that dares to dip their toes in the watershed of personal opinion...
Consider for a moment - you're pregnant and you're considering abortion. A fetus has a real, registerable heartbeat at 6 weeks. A fetus can successfully survive birth and lead a normal, healthy life from as early as 8 weeks. Ongoing research and pharmaceutical development continues to drive upward the survival rate of prematurely born babies. Then, consider for a moment those who cannot have children of their own. Those who's doctors just told them that they have indemetriosis or another long-term cancer/disease state that affects their ability to conceive, and that they'll probably never conceive. This growing population of women - be they single, married to a Man, living an alternative lifestyle with female partner, etc. - all they want is a child.
Consider for a moment - YOU are the President, and you have been given the ultimate task of steering not only your nation, but your military, and several global councils in many different and challenging leadership positions towards a safer, more free world. Yet, your advisors have just come to you with new information about a nuclear threat, and/or an airborne chemical that is under development in another country. On top of this burden, you have 74 million seniors between the ages of 55-65 whom are nearing retirement, and looking to you for help because they haven't saved enough money to live through it. Your country's literacy rate is the lowest among all industrialized nations in the world. And, to top it off, you're ultimately in charge of hundreds of thousands of federal employees, government agencies, and contractors, hundreds of billions in taxpayer revenues, budgets, and expenses, and are committed to trade deficits and surpluses with 95% of all other countries in the world...
Consider for a moment - you own your own business. You employ nearly 100 people. You have pioneered your way to being one of the top 3 leaders in your industry among small businesses. But you aren't able to survive because a customer came in to one of your offices wearing a long dress - she steps on the bottom of her dress, causing her to fall and break her arm. She sued you, and won, for damages caused from the accident - to the tune of $4.1 million.
Now, take a step back, and consider this: do you think it's possible that we all make mistakes? Do you think it's possible that we're all human? I'll guess you answered yes to both.
So, what makes you think GW is any different? He's not. But he has been elected, by an overwhelming majority - the most in this nations history in fact - to be our President. And while you may be free to disagree, and GW may or may not be right, your role in our society is to walk your thoughts and beliefs up the system, through your local, and state governments, through your Congressmen, dignitaries, and lobbyists. It is also to remember there is always more than one side to any story, respect each other, and be ye not the first to cast stones. You have a voice. Let it be heard. But more importantly, let it be not an ingnorant voice; let it be an educated voice.
I applaud your enthusiasm, and passion in your beliefs. We might not agree, but we can respectfully disagree, discuss and debate, and reach a dual understanding of each side of the story. This is truly what leads to an open, honest, and fair architecture in policy and legislative decisions, etc.
And again, remember, GW isn't the only one in the White House. No one person could honestly bear the burden of all that comes with such a position. Could you?
Now I ask you, having heard a few different perspectives... is someone that kills people because they don't "fit into the mainstream" (e.g., they openly express that they don't agree with the ruling party) any different than someone that aborts a baby because they don't "fit into their life/lifestyle?" I'm not trying to play St. Peter - because it is certainly not my place to judge, but I just don't see the value in aborting a child when there are no risk factors involved, especially when so many people out there would be so thankful to have a child of their own but cannot. It's my belief that abortion should only be considered in times of dire emergency, caused by significant risk factors - such as the endangerment of the mother's life - and should be agreed upon by not less than three, independently practicing (e.g., not in the same office or medical group), in-good-standing physicians.
just my 2 cents.

Hey Jessica,
I've been trying to get a hold of you since graduation. I tried e-mailing you at your Hollins address earlier in the summer and at your jessicaking.com address, but I haven't heard from you.
Aside from wanting to see how things are, I really need your Relay materials from last year. If you can send them to me I would really appreciate it. Hope all is well with you and Laurie.
Love,
Danielle
